Jayati Ghosh is a distinguished and extraordinarily prolific economist and professor whose many interests include globalization, international finance, employment patterns in developing countries, macroeconomic policy, and issues related to gender and development. She was born in 1955 and educated at Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the University of Cambridge.

She is a professor at JNU and has held other positions at Tufts University and Cambridge, lecturing meanwhile at academic institutions throughout India. She is one of the founders of the Economic Research Foundation in New Delhi, a non-profit trust devoted to progressive economic research. (Selections of her columns from the Macroscan, the Foundation's outlet, will be published as Tracking the Macroeconomy.) Additionally, she is Executive Secretary of the International Development Economics Associates, a network of economists critical of the mainstream economic paradigm of neo-liberalism.

Outside of academia, Professor Ghosh has been a consultant and researcher for many government and non-government organizations, nationally and internationally. She has published widely. With C. P. Chandrasekhar she has written Crisis as Conquest: Learning from East Asia (2001) and The Market that Failed: A Decade of Neoliberal Economic Reforms in India (2002), and edited the forthcoming Economics of the New Imperialism. She was the principal author of the West Bengal Human Development Report which has received the UNDP Prize for excellence in analysis.
